Police said the gang were waiting to ambush an innocent driver

A man is recovering from a fractured eye socket and other serious facial injuries after being attacked by a gang lying in wait for an innocent driver.

Police said the gang pounced on the 23-year-old's car while he was waiting at traffic lights on Saughtonhall Drive, Edinburgh on Saturday at 0015 GMT.

Five teenagers began to kick and punch the car, which also held the man's girlfriend and parents.

The man was attacked when he got out of his car to speak to the gang.

The youths are male, between 14 and 18 years old, all of slim build and were wearing dark coloured clothing. One of the youths had blonde, spiky hair.

A Lothian and Borders Police spokeswoman said: "This type of incident is extremely rare.

"We are appealing to anyone who was in the area at the time and who may have witnessed this assault to get in touch with the police."
